ttmms... (things that make me smile)...

Most people who have known me more than just a few days probably have discovered that I can be pretty easily entertained and amused.  I get a kick out of small things (not like midgets and such!) and enjoy finding quirky bits in life.  I'm an avid reader-of-license plates and actually have a list of fun ones I've seen.  I love strangely colored or shaped fruit or veges or just things that look out-of-the-ordinary.  I have the carcasses of several brightly-colored bugs in a box on my dresser.   I see faces on cars, either front end or back.

All these things make me smile and give me joy.

I think it's a good thing to be able to find fun and to take pleasure in the small things in life.  I mean, isn't that what our lives are really made up of-- an occasional big thing here and there strung together with many many small things in between?  I know I don't wait to wait around for a big thing to enjoy when I can delight in so many other little things along the way.

And that is what this blog is really about-- experiencing the daily life stuff and looking and listening for God's hand and voice in it all.  And seeing what delights He has put here for us to enjoy if we will allow ourselves to be easily entertained.

In light of all of that, I present to you today one of the many Things That Make Me Smile...

I have recently discovered ...the happiest cars on earth:

Tell me that doesn't make you smile!! : )

I am grateful for smiling cars...

A joyful heart is good medicine...

ttmms...

Today I was at work enjoying a snack of raspberries and almonds.
I was happily munching along when this little character showed up...
Who, on earth, was this?
A strange little "person" whom I could possibly call
Mr. Raspberry...
or, perhaps, Little Orphan Almondine?
What a silly, happy little face--
I couldn't help but giggle every time I looked at it...
and, yes, even laugh out loud!
Yes, I do realize I have yet to grow up...
and to stop playing with my food...
but, tell me, what fun would THAT be?!
I like to think it's just a bit of that
"created in God's image" piece called
CREATIVITY
and
DELIGHT.
...yes, this is one of those
Things That Make Me Smile...
(go ahead...you can laugh at it, too!)

things that make me smile...

I have always loved abbreviations and acronyms. Long before there was texting, I was using "bcs" for "because" and "thx" for "thanks." I have always been an avid note-taker, with as much detail included as possible, and perhaps, that is the reason I've always loved abbreviations.

Well, I have a new post abbreviation: TTMMS!. It stands for "Thing That Make Me Smile!" I have decided to do some posting of random things that make me smile...bcs, after all, that's what living a Heart Rock Life (HRL??) is all about, right?--finding joy in the little things, in the daily discoveries, in the many ways God shows us His presence and His love in our daily lives... if we will have eyes to see and hearts to understand...and mouths with which to show our delight!

And so, today is the first TTMMS! posting because this totally made me smile!

This was a chocolate cupcake from The Sweet and Saucy Shop--chocolate with kahlua frosting!--and it originally looked like this:

But, after I had taken a bunch of bites out of the bottom, I was left with a bit of the top and some frosting... and this delightful little smile!! :) (no, I did NOT make it into this! it really was all of its own accord!)

Definitely TTMMS!

a lizard's big heart...

Yesterday, a friend found me on Facebook, and we became "friends" once again. She had recently taken a little photo journey to a botanical gardens in Quail Canyon near Encinitas, CA and had posted some of her photos on her profile.

As I looked through her beautiful floral photos, I came across the one below and just had to share it with you...
That's one big-hearted lizard!!!
(Isn't this the BEST photo?!?!)
**big thanks to Diane for letting me use her photo!!

celebrate the Sabbath...with a little humor...

This may be a bit unorthodox, as we don't normally think of the Sabbath being a humorous day or concept. But, I do believe our amazing God has a good sense of humor (let's remember the platypus and the anglerfish!), so I couldn't resist sharing this little "funny" today...

Sabbath -
a weekly festival having its origin
in the fact that God made the world in six days
and was arrested on the seventh.

pure joy...

...pure joy!...

Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
"The LORD has done great things for them."
~Psalm 126:2
If you laugh a lot,
when you get older
your wrinkles will be in the right places.

looking dandy....

I love dandelions.

I don't think I've yet told you how much and why I like them, but that is fodder for another post another day. Today I share with you this photo I took of a couple of dandy dandelions...one in bloom and one in "seed."
Funny, but I was with my mom when I saw this and laughed together. We both thought the same thing about it... this is what it made us think of:

That's right! US!! : )

(can you see the resemblance??!)

kissing toads...

I've been told that a girl has to kiss a lot of frogs to find her Handsome Prince...

Is that a volunteer I see?

Ummm...yeah. It looks like a toad to me...

...a toad with a purpose...

...and determination...

Hmmmm. I just don't know if I'm ready for this kind of a commitment...?

a quiet beach...in Michigan??

Whenever I go to visit my family in Michigan, I seem to have to see at least one of the Great Lakes. Maybe it's because I'm so used to living by the ocean... or maybe I just really like giant bodies of water across which one cannot see land. I usually end up taking a day trip drive with someone (most times my mom) to see Lake Michigan. (on my most recent trip I made it to the Lake twice!! and I accidently called it the ocean at least once--and was laughed at by my niece!)

On one visit, my mom and I drove to the lakeside city of Grand Haven. (I called it a coastal city and was once again laughed at by my niece!) Grand Haven is a wonderful little city that has a lighthouse that you can walk out to on a long cement walkway. If you squint and look through the sea wheat (or beach grass, or whatever it's called!) in the picture below, on the right side, you can see the lighthouse beacon tower at the far right, and a bit to the left of it, the little 'house' part of the lighthouse. (they're both bright red)

After photographing the scene above, I looked a bit further to the right, and what...?!!

Wait a minute!! I thought I was in Michigan!!
What the heck is THAT tree doing there?!?

Yes, THAT one!
The one with the fluffy green fronds instead of leaves!!
It IS a palm tree!
And I was being laughed at for calling it the coast and the ocean??

Hmmmm.
I had to investigate this strange appearance of a tropical tree growing on a beach in the Midwest...
Well, a palm tree it was indeed.
A REAL palm tree it was not.
But, someone was sure enjoying their tropical view
of Lake Michigan!
I enjoyed their creativity,
and definitely delighted in their sense of humor!
Whatever it takes to get that warm tropical feeling ...

You just gotta love it...

a steal of a deal...

This week I am with my family in the lovely state of Michigan... which is right now in the glorious state of spring!! So many beautiful flowering trees and an unbelievable amount of different shades of green! I, of course, am taking far too many photos as usual! (I am, however, only making short posts this week, as my mom's computer is dial-up and does not like to upload photos. I will have to share the loveliness with you all when I get home next weekend.)

But for now... one of my favorites so far this week:

Hmmmm.... 60% off or "free"??
Have a good week and many smiles!

things you DON'T want to see in your pool...

That's definitely something you don't want to find in your swimming pool!!
My friend is the President of her condo's Home Owner's Association, and she received a late night 911 call. When she listened to the message left on her voice mail, she discovered that one of the owners had seen a creature --a very large snake-- in the pool. They weren't sure... but it looked very real and more than a bit intimidating!
When I got to her house in the morning,
I found the following note in the elevator...

I love it...
Just one more of those things that make me smile!!
* * * * *
(but I do think they should have written: "fowling" the water!)
These are things that bring joy to my day!

things that go bump in the night...(or, under the stove!)

How many of you like to reach your hand into small, dark, hidden places? (I'm thinking Indiana Jones here and cockroaches, rats, etc!) Though I'm pretty brave about creatures and crawling things, I do have my limits. I don't like any bug with too many legs or those which look like something from the prehistoric eras, for example--earwigs, cockroaches, centipedes, cave crickets, jerusalem crickets (hey! those aren't JUST in caves or in Jerusalem!), etc. I think you get the idea.

I don't normally mind soft furry little creatures that many women scream about like mice or moles or shrews or even bats. (sidebar: for some reason, though I had terrible nightmares about vampires through much of my childhood and, as an adult, I steer far clear from ANYTHING at all vampirish, I LOVE bats!! Sorry, Mom!) I do, however, prefer not to stick my hand into dark places where these things may be residing.

Well, a couple of nights ago, I was making a cake, and I needed my little cooling racks. I have an electric stove with a big drawer in the bottom, and that's where the racks live. When I pulled out the drawer to get the cooling racks, one of them slipped behind the drawer and fell into the darkness of "UNDER THE STOVE!" HORRORS!!

I was going to have to reach my hand into the dark and potentially creepy netherworld of "UNDER THE STOVE!" Now, I know, I could have pulled the drawer completely out of the stove, so I could see behind there before sticking my hand in, but well, have you ever tried to get those drawers back on the tracks correctly?? And, I know, if I were a bit more obssesive-compulsive about cleaning UNDER the stove and refrigerator, perhaps this little venture wouldn't be quite so intimidating. (do any of you really DO that??!)

So.... all that said, I decided I couldn't possibly have anything THAT scary under my stove and reached my bare hand back behind the drawer and into the darkness UNDER THE STOVE. I tentatively tapped around with my fingertips in the general vicinity of where I thought the rack would be. I couldn't feel it, so I reached further into the darkness and used my whole hand to feel around.

AND
THEN
IT
HAPPENED!!!
I TOUCHED SOMETHING SMALL AND FURRY!!!

I yelped and yanked my hand out of there so fast! That weren't no dust bunny under there, folks! It was something much more solid, much more furry feeling!

Needless to say, I decided to wrangle the drawer out of the bottom of the stove so I could get a view of what I had touched or would be touching on my next attempt to get the rack. I pulled and tugged and wiggled it until I had it off and lying in the middle of the kitchen floor. On hands and knees, I bent over and cautiously, yet oh so bravely!, peered into the darkness UNDER THE STOVE.... and this is what I saw :

Wha..????
Wait a minute....

ok... so, it IS a mouse!!...

...but NOT quite the mouse I was expecting!! :)
This was one of my cat's old toys she had lost under the stove!

I decided to let him help me write this post...

You just gotta love a good laugh at yourself!!
...and maybe you better check under your stove...

good medicine...

Laughter dulls the sharpest pain
and flattens out the greatest stress.
To share it is to give a gift of health
because, as someone pointed out,
“Ulcers can’t grow while you’re laughing.”
~Hunter “Patch” Adams

Now, I don't know if the bit about ulcers is true or not, but I do know God tells us having a cheerful heart is good for us... So, I'm sharing the gift of health with you by bringing you some funny faces for a few smiles...

A cheerful heart is good medicine
~Proverbs 17:22

All the days of the oppressed are wretched,
but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.

a Bible study lesson and a laugh...

This week has been a long week at work (despite the Monday holiday!), and today was an exceptionally long day for me. I just got home after 12 hours at work, and I'm tired. I was working on a project that has to be finished by tomorrow, so I had to stay until I finished it.

I was much in need of a bit of laughter to end the day, and I remembered a bit from one of my favorite comedians, Brian Regan. If you've never seen or heard him, let it be known that he is wonderfully funny! And his humor is clean... which is fantastic!

I was introduced to his comedy at a family camp a couple of summers ago. They were showing this "Dinner Party" clip from "I Walked On The Moon" to demonstrate how so many people behave in Bible studies or small groups--where the Me Monster comes out, and one person takes over the discussion. (I'm sure you know just what I'm talking about!!) I laughed so very hard when I saw this, and I thought I would treat you to a bit of Brian Regan tonight...

I hope you enjoy the video and that it brings a smile, or a chuckle, or even a belly laugh to your day...

tag, you're it....

OK, it's about time I "got in the game." It's been a week (or so!) since Billy dashed over from What I Learned Today and tagged me, and I've yet to get my game on! (perhaps, I've been playing Frozen Tag?!) Before I join in the fun, however, I must make a few comments about the game of tag....

First, thank you, Billy, for picking me!!!! I know it probably sounds silly, but it feels good to be chosen rather than added by default due to being the last one left over after the choosing is finished. Can you tell I didn't have the most enjoyable p.e. class experiences?! If you're thinking I was usually one of THE last people chosen when teams were picked, you are absolutely correct. And, no, I'm not bitter, but I am a wee bit emotionally scarred. : ) All that to say, whooooo hooooo! I get to play!!!

One other thing, I'm not the fastest runner in the world, or in my class, or on the block, or even in my apartment (wait a minute! I'm the only one in my apartment, so, I guess that DOES make me the fastest!!). As you can imagine, I was continually the one others tagged when we actually played tag. Boy, did I ever like Frozen Tag best--at least then I could get a rest while I was frozen. So, perhaps that is the reason for my slow entry into the game... or perhaps, it's because I have nothing random nor weird to tell about myself? (ok, maybe not...I guess I'm just slow!)

The rules for this game of tag are as follows: list six random or weird facts about yourself, and then tag six others. Simple, right? Hmmm. Well, I've been trying to come up with some really wacky facts, but for lack of crazier, weirder things about me, I've decided to share the following rather random factoids...

1. I lived on an island for 18 years! Really. An island in the Pacific. (does that make me a Pacific Islander?) Ok, well, only 26 miles off the coast of Los Angeles--Catalina Island, to be exact. I just moved back to the "mainland" four years ago (and have discovered that, sometimes, this is a much bigger "island.")

2. Though most people consider me a "strong" person, I tend to cry at sunsets...and Frosty the Snowman (when he melts. come on! that's just sad!!)...and at the Carol of the Fryers Christmas song by Holiday Hens & Friends (if you haven't heard it, you must listen...it's wonderful!)

3. Growing up, I used to have vampire dreams--for years! Don't ask me why; I don't have a clue! I had never seen any movies or tv shows with vampires nor read books about them (until high school, and that was just a really stupid idea!). So, if anyone has any brilliant insight into the scary! vampire dream thing, feel free to let me know. By the way, though many others seem to be fascinated with them recently, I still do NOT like vampires!!

4. Though most of you have probably never heard of it and will probably think it sounds gross, one of my very favorite foods is pickled bologna. I can't help it. I love the stuff. Normally I eat quite healthy and very few processed foods, but, mmmmmm-mmmmm! I can't get enough pickled bologna! And I can't get it here in CA, so whenever I go home to Michigan, I bring back several packages with me in my suitcase. (try explaining those luggage weight overages as you're pulling pickled bologna out of your suitcase! talk about looking like a 'hick'!) Occasionally, a kind-hearted family member may even mail me a bit for a treat!

5. I have been in the top of one of the smokestacks of the Queen Mary. It's really high up! (and a bit scary!!) I was on an "unofficial tour" of the ship with a college friend who loved the ship and had studied maps of all the secret nooks and crannies of it. We did get chased by a security guard once, and I was sure all of our pictures were going to be plastered on the front page of the newspaper: "Christian College Co-eds Caught Breaking & Entering on Queen Mary." (that would have gone over well with the Dean of Students!) But the final place we went was into the smokestack, climbed hand-over-hand straight up a 40-ft rung ladder, and onto a little platform at the inner rim of the middle smokestack--the view of the city at night was fantastic, but it was frighteningly high off the ground!

and 6. I think I'm on my second life right now. Let me explain... we moved many times as I was growing up, and these were the houses we lived in (in this order):

  • 1st grade--a regular farm house in the country
  • 2nd grade--a very large house which had, in its past, been a small hospital
  • 3rd-5th grade--a lovely house which had once been a funeral home
  • 6th grade--an old house with a cemetary just beyond its back yard.

See... one complete life cycle! And 'normal' abodes since then. (no wonder I had vampire dreams!)

Well, friends, there you have it. Six rather random (and possibly a couple of 'weird') facts about me!

And now, it's on to you.... I shall tag the following folks:

Thanks again, Billy, for the tag... and for anyone who hasn't checked out Billy's blog, he's a great storyteller and his blog is a wonderful read! Check it out!

edit 1/14/09: I just discovered that Dave was already tagged by Travis about a month ago. I wouldn't want to torture anyone twice with the same tag (though Travis played along when it was done to him! what a guy!), so I've invited Skeeter to play with us!

heart potato... (or "hot potato" if you have a Boston accent!)...

This week I received a real treat... I got a "care package" in the mail!! It was from a friend of mine in Arizona and arrived totally out of the blue. I felt like I was back in college all over again! I remember the excitement of receiving a box of love from someone who was thinking of me. It never really mattered what was in the box; it was enough that someone was letting me know they were thinking of me. And that was what I felt like this week! My friend, BB, was thinking of me.

The contents of this box also reminded me that my friend knows me...

There were some yummy heart-shaped cookies, a note, and some photos of us when I last visited. But the best part was something that not everyone would be so thrilled with. I, however, thoroughly enjoyed it...

...that's right!
A HEART
a potato heart!!! : )
what fun!!
I've never seen a potato quite like it...
and I don't think I've enjoyed a potato more!
  • Thank You, God, for friends who know us so well... (151)
  • Thank You for the delight we can find in the little things... (150)
  • And thank You for heart-shaped tubers that bring such JOY!!! (149)
