the joy spread by the kids in our lives...

Though I don't have kids of my own, I love the kids and grandkids of my friends. They bring such joy into my life, and I am grateful for them.

This New Year's Eve, my friends had two of their grandkids with them for a few days. I, always in for a good time, was invited to their house for New Year's Eve and a sleep-over. (I think I was probably the "out" so they didn't HAVE to stay up till midnight with the boys!)

The day and evening were full of fun, food, games, and just enjoying each other's company. While cooking dinner, I was handed a pen and an envelope by the 8yr old, and inside the envelope was the following note:

Translation (in case you can't quite get it):
Dear Shree:
[short for Shri-ri, a name they all call me due to boy #3 saying my name that way for a short time]
How are you doing?
(blank box for answer)
and what and when are you going to play with us?
(two blank boxes for answers)
And [till] what time will we stay up?
(blank box for answer)

I responded to the questions with the following:
excellent
after dinner and dishes
games? (uno?) later, a movie?
To which he responded with a note on the back of the original card, stuffed in the envelope again:

The above note was preceded with shouts of delight in response to the "stay up till" answer!

...for these kids in my life, I am grateful!! Thanks, God, for the amazing ways You bless us with others in our lives!

"...their children will be a blessing." ~Psalm 37:26b

happy anniversary to my friend!

This is my dear friend Andrea.
Today is a special anniversary...
a sad one
yet a joy-full one, too.
One year ago today,
Andie traded in her earthly home for her heavenly one.
The sadness...
for those of us who knew and loved her
and had to say "good-bye"
far too early...
The joy...
for she who has now enjoyed a year of celebration in heaven...
dancing, laughing, singing,
"hanging out" with Jesus
and worshipping the Father with the angels!!
What an amazing thought!

We miss you, Andie!

But we rejoice with you... and can't wait to see you again!

orange you glad?

Orange you glad it's Saturday??
Orange you "LOVIN' " it??

My friends who live in Phoenix found this in their grocery bag and were wonderful enough to do as I would-- PHOTOGRAPH it!! They then sent this "love"ly juicy photo to me! My heart is warmed by their message of "love"!

Happy Saturday, all! : )

a "love"ly dinner....

Tonight a friend of mine came over to visit.
Not only did she come to visit, she brought supplies with her and MADE ME DINNER!
I felt like a celebrity with a personal chef!
What a gift of love she gave me... and delicious, too!
When I sat down to eat, this is what I saw on my plate...
LOVE on a bed of rice!
(lots of love)
I am grateful for the love she showed me by making me dinner,
and I am grateful for the love God showed me
in a little heart on a bed of rice
and in the big heart of a friend!
ps. I know the photos aren't the best, but that's not what this post is about... the food was actually very beautiful!!

true friendship...

A blessed thing it is for any man or woman to have a friend;
one human soul whom we can trust utterly;
who knows the best and the worst of us,
and who loves us in spite of all our faults;
who will speak the honest truth to us,
while the world flatters us to our face
and laughs at us behind our back;
who will give us counsel and reproof
in the day of prosperity and self-conceit,
but who, again, will comfort and encourage us
in the day of difficulty and sorrow,
when the world leaves us alone to fight our own battle as we can.
~Charles Kingsley
Thank you, Father, for this kind of friends in our lives...
those who love us in spite of ourselves;
those who love us with Your love;
those who remind us of who we are in You;
those You have given to us
and us to them.
I am grateful.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work:
If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!
~Ecclesiates 4:9-10

being loved...

Now, to all you out there who may be thinking I've gone over to the "dark side" with my post yesterday... fear not! I am still here searching for God's amazing love in all I see and delighting in the ways He shows me along life's way. There are times, however, when one just has to tell it like it is. Yesterday's post was one of those times--a time of gut-level honesty...and, in the end, a preaching to myself!

And, today... an example of the joy, the great delight, the unbelievable comfort and wonder of loving and being loved... (204)

...things? How about "people" instead?! Since I've been on a roll the past couple of days about some of my favorites...here are a few more... they are my friends' grandkids, and they are so very much fun to hang out with.......going to the beach, to the movies, playing cards together (tonight was Go Fish and Uno), talking about life, laughing together...

good times!!

God has…
ordered things that we may learn
to bear one another’s burdens,
for there is no man without his faults,
none without his burden.
None is sufficient unto himself;
none is wise in himself;
therefore, we must support one another,
comfort, help, teach, and advise one another.
~Thomas a Kempis
Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
~Galatians 6:2
Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.
Psalm 68:16
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
who comforts us in all our troubles,
so that we can comfort those in any trouble
with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives,
so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
~2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Father, I am, indeed grateful for the comfort You give and for the way you speak to me through the voices of those around me. Thank you for giving us the Comforter and for giving us friends...

me and God...

I love this country song that Josh Turner put out this year. I know it is very simple, but I love the thought of it and the simplicity. And I love that it was very high up on the secular country charts for many weeks....
Me And God
by Josh Turner
There ain't nothing that can't be done
By me and God
Ain't nobody come in between me and God
One day we'll live together
Where the angels trod
Me and God
Early in the morning talking it over
Me and God
Late at night talking it over
Me and God
You could say we’re like two peas in a pod
Me and God

He's my Father
He's my friend
The beginning and the end
He rules the world
With a staff and rod
We're a team
Me and God

I am weak and He is strong
Me and God
He forgives me when I'm wrong
Me and God
He's the one I lean on
When life gets hard
Me and God

He's my Father
He's my friend
The beginning and the end
He rules the world
With a staff and rod
We're a team
Me and God
He rules the world
With a staff and rod
We're a team
Me and God
We're a team--Me and God

the glory of friendship...

The glory of friendship
is not the outstretched hand,
nor the kindly smile
nor the joy of companionship;
it is the spirited inspiration
that comes to one when he discovers
that someone else believes in him
and is willing to trust him
with his friendship.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

...today, I am grateful for my friends...

  • for those who know me (73)
  • for those who love me (72)
  • for those who encourage me (71)
  • for those who BELIEVE in me! (70)
  • for those who trust me with their friendship (69)

Thank you, God... for I am well and truly blessed!

heart of remembrance...

Today is the anniversary of a very dear friend of mine. It is the three-month anniversary of her death, which may sound like a morbid or depressing topic about which to blog, but... actually, it is the three-month anniversary of her joyful entry into her heavenly home and the beginning of an amazing eternity there! And THAT is reason to celebrate!

My friend, Andrea (or Andie, as most people knew her), was a wonderful person with a great big heart! She was known by most everyone in the small town where we lived (including many tourists as well!), and her memorial --her life celebration -- was attended by about two hundred people. In her life here on earth, she wore a big smile and was full of laughter... that is how I will always remember her! She touched many lives with her caring, her cooking, and her couch, if you needed a place to lay your head!

On the day of her memorial service, when the 'festivities' were over, and we had finished with the clean-up, a mutual friend of ours and I went to a local Mexican restaurant to wind down. The previous few weeks had been very long and painful for me, as Andie had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and then passed away just three short weeks after the diagnosis. Those weeks had been full of doctor appointments, difficult conversations, hospitalization, and many, many emotions. I, personally, was exhausted.

When my friend and I were seated in the restaurant, chips and salsa were placed before us, and we dove right in. We (meaning mostly ME, as I LOVE salsa!!) had eaten our way through the first bowl of salsa, and I was just pushing the bowl to the edge of the table for the waiter to give us a refill, when I saw something that brought joy to my saddened heart and made me LAUGH!! (Can you guess?!?)

This is what I saw in the salsa bowl:

...for those of you who need a little help with this, I've cropped it out for you:

And here, I had scooped it out of the bowl and put it on the edge of my glass...

How much fun is THAT?!?! Once again, it was my loving Father's way of telling me He knows my heart, my sorrows, my language... and reminding me that He is in every moment of this life with me and that He loves me. And, I must admit, I think it's rather funny that it was in a bowl of salsa, and Andie was of Mexican heritage!!! Perhaps this is a reminder that she is dancing in heaven ... maybe even the Salsa!!

So, here's to you, my friend Andrea! A heart of love in remembrance of you... of the love you shared with others and the love we had for you! and of the love of a kind and generous Father Who continually speaks to our hearts!

  • for the love of a best friend (67)
  • for the joy of reaching heaven! (66)
  • for a Savior Who gave me everything so I may be there with Him! (65)
  • for dancing (64)
  • for hearts found in wonderfully strange places! (63)

...for these, I am truly grateful today!

sharing the love...

Today's post is about "sharin' the love"... Two weeks ago (I sheepishly say!) my friend and neighbor Eva announced to the world (or at least to all of her readers!!) that she loves my blog! by honoring me with this award:

I was most excited to know that not only was someone out there reading my blog, but they were actually enjoying it! : ) (Sidenote to all of you who do leave me comments-- I LOVE hearing from you and am absolutely thrilled that you stop by to visit and check out my blog!! I am truly honored that you would take the time to read my humble words.)

And so, in keeping with the 'award tradition,' I am passing on the love to those whom I read and enjoy on a regular basis...

  1. Ann Voskamp of A Holy Experience - I love reading her blog on a daily basis, as she inspires me with her depth of insight and her beautiful photos. She writes about life and faith and seeing God in every breath of her day as she walks in her roles of farmer's wife, mother, and homeschool teacher of six. Her writings are very visual, and poignant, and she reminds me to seek and pursue our Lord in every moment and circumstance.
  2. Farmgirl Susan of Farmgirl Fare - Her blog is a rich assortment of photos and stories of life on her Missiouri farm. She also posts lots of delicious recipes that make me hungry no matter how long it's been since I've eaten! I love to live the farmlife vicariously through her! (and she has wonderful creatures on her farm!!)
  3. Kimberly of The Heart Rock Collective (and Transformation of the Spirit) - I feel a special kinship with Kimberly, as we share a love of Heart Rocks as well as the joy of seeking God's blessing in our daily lives. On her HRC blog, she searches out and brings together people who, like herself, have found heart rocks and meaningful experiences that accompany them. I look forward to reading her posts, as she inspires me to continue to see God's love in my daily life.
  4. Stardust of What's in store a God-Blessed Box - I think of Stardust as my Singaporean friend though we've never met but on our blogs. She is an amazing photographer, and I eagerly await her postings to see what it is she has been 'seeing' each day! She has a great 'eye' and one can tell that she so enjoys discovering the Creator in His creation!
  5. Picturing God Through His Creation - Though he hasn't posted in awhile, Mr. Mills takes fantastic nature photos, and I love his writing. I think what he writes is very thought-provoking and well worth the time to read! Since he's not currently posting, I've been taking some walks through his archives and catching up on what he's previously written.
  6. Ree of Confessions of a Pioneer Woman - I just recently discovered this little gem, and I've been greatly enjoying her writings. She is a delightful ranch mom with a knack for words and photography, and her website is one full of stories, photos, and cowboy recipes! (and if you like cowboy romances, you should start reading her story of her romance with her now-husband-- it's great reading!! but be forewarned, it's a cliff hanger because it's still not all written yet!!)
Also, a big THANKS to Eva for inspiring and encouraging me to start my blog (and for her entertaining posts!)... and a final great big THANK YOU to all of you who visit me here! I truly appreciate you...

(ps. please forgive the smooshed-up, space-less formatting, but sometimes the formatting tool on these posts refuses to behave!!)
  • the joy of writing (43)
  • the art of creation (42)
  • the internet! (41)
  • the ability to meet new friends all around the globe! (40)
  • wonderful people who take the time to visit my blog! (39)

tribute to the queen!

As stated in the title, today's post is a tribute to the queen--not the queen of any country but the queen who reigned in my kingdom for the past 16 years or so--my cat Reina. I have dedicated today's post to her, as it was one month ago today I had to say good-bye to this fuzzy little friend of mine. So, hopefully you won't mind too much if I tell you a bit about this companion God gave me for these many years...and share a few of my favorite pictures.

I never intended to have a cat, but Reina had other plans. One morning I must have left my front door open (in my 2nd floor apt). I was in front of the sink in the bathroom getting ready for work and saw movement out of the corner of my eye--there was a black cat sitting on the lid of the toilet looking at me! It was the beginning of a long (and sometimes long-suffering!) friendship...

From that day on, for many weeks she persistently graced me with her presence. I guess she had decided upon me as suitable "subject" material (as in 'a queen and her subjects') and was just getting me used to the idea! I told her she could hang out with me when I was home, 'but I'm not feeding you, and you're not MY cat!' Then it was, "ok, you can sleep over, but I'm not feeding you, and you're NOT my cat!' That progressed to "well, here's a snack, but ....not my cat!" And eventually, as you've no-doubt guessed, she became my cat. I think she had it planned out all along!

I heard it said once:
"Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods.
Cats have never forgotten this."
-Unknown

Reina had a very long memory of this--this being worshipped and treated as royalty. I'm sure some of her thoughts were: "You are now my subject, and I shall bestow upon you the honor of serving me all of my days. I will allow you the honor of preparing and serving me delicious tidbits, of keeping me warm and comfy, of providing me with entertainment and a comfortable lap. I shall even allow you to clean my litterbox (and to pick up those stray pieces of litter I scatter in my frenzied litter-flipping)." (fortunately, I only had to deal with that part the last four years of city living!) "Oh, and while you're at it, please don't forget to fill my waterglass! You know I don't really like to drink out of a bowl."

She, graciously lowering herself to my level, made her catty attempts at helping me with my work:
and once even helped me stuff envelopes for a mailing:

...but 'work' always resulted in the need to nap... a talent at which she was definitely the QUEEN!

So that no one thinks she was just a sleeper... she loved to chase bugs, spiders, and moths, and anything that would run away (including me, at times!), and once almost broke through my living room window trying to get at a MONSTER out on our balcony! (a large iguana that had escaped from a neighbor) She loved to tear through the apartment at top speed as though there were a pack of wild dogs on her tail. And she even managed once, by reaching through the bars of my balcony, to catch a hummingbird. I believe that was her greatest physical accomplishment; she was quite proud, though it made only the tiniest of snacks.
And, although cats are always reminding us that they are indeed NOT DOGS!, Reina did learn a trick... Whenever I would get the carton of eggs out of the fridge, she would come to the edge of the dining room carpet and wait for me to bring an egg to her. I would hold it down to her level, and she would reach up and tap on it with her paw to show me that she would like to have it. (She was convinced this was a trick SHE had taught ME!) One day she went down to visit the neighbors (she believed everyone on the top floor of our apartment building were also her loyal, devoted subjects!). They had let her in to visit for awhile, and when they were cooking eggs in the kitchen, she sat on the edge of the dining room carpet and gracefully pawed the air! When they told me the story, they were amazed that she was asking them for an egg! : ) What a brilliant cat, don't you think?!
There are people who reshape the world by force or argument,
but the cat just lies there, dozing;
and the world quietly reshapes itself to suit her comfort and convenience.
-Allen and Ivy Dodd
Yes, I must admit, in my own way, I did "reshape myself to suit her comfort and convenience." But my Reina was a faithful friend, in her queenly way; she greeted me at the door each day, kept my bed warm in the winter nights, let me pet her to her heart's content (not mine, but then, it's not really about ME, is it?!), and traipsed with me to northern CA and back in the past few years. She was a good companion, and I miss her company and her furry little face. Now, whenever I crack an egg or use the can opener, I keep expecting to see her sitting at the edge of the kitchen, waiting (semi)patiently for me to give her a treat. And, it's strange, after all these years, to not have her greet me when I come home from work...
But I am grateful for the time she was such a part of my life... isn't that the way it is when we have to say good-bye to friends? It's never easy, but we have many memories to warm our hearts ...and I am thankful for the years she was my cat... or... I was her person...

As every cat owner knows, nobody owns a cat.
- Ellen Perry Berkeley
  • for the years enjoying the companionship of my cat, Reina... and for the silly and wonderful creature she was! (27)

friendship...

Friendship is a sheltering tree.
~Samuel Taylor Coleridge
I am most grateful for the friends in my life. They make this journey a much more enjoyable one...sharing the sorrows and joys and everyday things.
I am grateful...
18. for neighbors who are friends (thanks, Eva!)
17. for friends who are neighbors (very close by!)
16. for the laughter of children
15. for bright eyes alight when they see me
14. for a visit from far-away friends
13. for a sunset dinner eaten at water's edge with friends
12. for the joy of conversation over a cup of coffee
11. for sharing a ride to work together
Friendship!
Mysterious cement of the soul!
Sweet’ner of life and Solder of Society.
I owe thee much--
~Robert Blair
