celebrate the Sabbath...with PRAISE...

It is good to praise [thank] the LORD
and make music to your name, O Most High,
to proclaim your love in the morning
and your faithfulness at night
to the music of the ten-stringed lyre
and the melody of the harp.
For you make me glad by your deeds, O LORD;
I sing for joy at the works of your hands.
Psalm 92:1-4
Charles H Spurgeon (1874), regarding vs 1:
  • "It is good ethically, for it is the Lord's right;
  • it is good emotionally, for it is pleasant to the heart;
  • it is good practically, for it leads others to render the same homage.

When duty and pleasure combine, who will be backward? To give thanks to God is but a small return for the great benefits wherewith He daily loadeth us; yet as He by His Spririt calls it a good thing we must not despise it, or neglect it. We thank men when they oblige us, how much more ought we to bless the Lord when He benefits us. Devout praise is always good, it is never our of season, never superfluous, but it is especially suitable to the Sabbath; a Sabbath without thanksgiving is a Sabbath profaned."

  1. well, you two guys are ahead of me on the Spurgeon bandwagon, as i just realized, though i know of him, i had never read anything by him before. i have read many of other classic Christian writers but not him. a friend just gave me 4 books of the 7volume set (from 1885)of Spurgeon's "The Treasury of David"--an exposition on the Psalms. i've started reading it in little bits (can't devour it in big gulps like i usually read!!), and it's delicious! so hearty (pun not intended, but appreciated), so full of God. i'm sure i'll be posting more of his stuff... : )

  2. What good words here, Sharilyn. FYI - I just now saw your comment from days ago on my blog. And then I read your comments to me here (on Jan. 8 post I think). Thanks so much. And yes I do LOVE the beach (or coast) and the woods. But I don't especially love the cold so I mostly venture out in the summer here for camping. Google Seward, AK. It is so beautiful! We love going there. Have a great week. Blessings, Jax
